Petrophysical evaluation and hydrocarbon potentiality of the Kareem sand reservoir at GS277 oil field, Gulf of Suez, Egypt

Abstract

Kareem Formation is one of the Gulf of Suez's most significant hydrocarbon resources. It makes a
substantial contribution to Egypt's overall oil production especially in Morgan and Badri fields.
Kareem sand reservoir is deposited as a fan-delta environment, which erodes the high rift shoulders
and deposits in the Basin. The present work deals with the petrophysical evaluation of Kareem Sand
Reservoir at GS277 Oil Field which is the only oil reservoir in the field. Comprehensive well log
analyses techniques were applied for a three-selected well in GS277 oil field. Those wells are named
GS277-1, GS277-A4 and GS277-A5. The minimum suite of logs consisted of gamma ray, density,
neutron, and resistivity logs; all the log data are in the form of LAS files. Specialized software was
used for the petrophysical evaluation of Kareem sand reservoir in this study. In this paper , the
essential petrophysical parameters were evaluated such as volume of shale (Vsh), effective porosity
(Øeff) and water saturation (Sw). Also, cross plotting techniques are used for water resistivity (Rw)
calculation and lithological identification for Kareem reservoir in the study area. The derived
parameters from the petrophysical evaluation were used to calculate the standard tank oil in place
(STOIIP) in Kareem sand reservoir in the study area. From the outputs of the petrophysical
evaluation, it was found that Kareem Formation is a good reservoir rock in most intervals, where the
interpretation of the well logging data indicates that the porosity ranges from 16% to 20% , shale
content ranges between 5% to about 7%, water saturation from 20% to about 30%, and Net pay
thickness ranges between 20 ft to about 50ft. The analysis of Lithological Identification cross plot
for Kareem Sand reservoir indicates the presence of mixed lithology composed of sandstone and
limestone. Petrophysical Analysis for Kareem Sand Reservoir in GS277 field indicate an
enhancement for the reservoir properties towards GS277-A4 and GS277-A5 wells which may be
highlight an opportunity for drilling a development well to maximize oil recovery from the field.
Standard Tank oil in place (STOIIP) for Kareem sand in GS277 Field is calculated depending on the
derived petrophysical parameters. The STOIIP ranged from 15 to 20 MMBO which highlighted a
huge amount of hydrocarbons that is under developed.
